The SEE for the 2012 Games Core Group has identified ‘Paralympics’ as a signature project for 2009-2010. This means that it is an area of special focus where we want to add value in the region inspired by the Games. This group aims to ensure that one of the priority objectives in the Framework for Action comes to life in Yorkshire and the Humber:  “Through the inspiration of the Paralympic Games significantly raise our region’s awareness and knowledge of diversity issues and opportunities”

A working group has been established in July 2009 to explore the opportunities for using the values of the Paralympics to maximum effect in the region, and an action plan is currently being drafted with an emphasis in 2009 and 2010 on creating opportunities for disabled individuals in the region, and engaging effectively with education, sporting and business communities

What are the main opportunities for developing a Paralympics skills, employment or education legacy linked to 2012 in Yorkshire and the Humber?

The working group is proposing 3 broad themes and sub-priorities as follows:

  • CREATING CHOICE
    • Increasing the infrastructure (facilities / workforce) to be able to offer increased choice of activities and opportunities for disabled young people and adults in Yorkshire
  • CELEBRATING ABILITY
    • Communicating success and maximising the inspirational impact of Paralympic / disabled role models
  • LEARNING ABOUT DIVERSITY
    • Within schools, colleges and universities and the business community
